When it comes to product recommendations, some Cortex stages treat product recommendation merge tags differently. The article discusses how recommendations are generated specifically for the Cart Abandon stage.

Using Product Recommendations in a Cart Abandon email
The purpose of this stage is to get a customer to re-engage and convert on all or one of the items left in the cart. This stage normally has a high conversion rate, so discounts are not needed. Product recommendations are useful for pulling shoppers across the finish line. Read below for the details on how each product recommendation is populated.
First Recommended Product
Cortex will utilize its artificial intelligence to populate the first merge tag as one of the items left in the cart. This gives the customer a reminder that they were planning to purchase this particular item and will prompt the user to click the item and convert. See the example below:
Additional Recommended Products
This is where the power of AI is leveraged. Cortex will select the remaining product recommendations based on the plethora of data that has been collected and analyzed for each individual’s purchase history, browsing behavior and other insights powered by Cortex. This selects the best possible products for each individual user, to increase engagement with your brand. You can see an example of the secondary product recs below:
This product recommendation scheme ensures your templates are ready to target your customer on their individual journey throughout your sales funnel.
See here for a full list of available merge tags, and then review this step-by-step guide on adding merge tags to your HTML email.
Product Recommendation Scheme - Advanced Option
The Cart Abandon template is set to a recommendation scheme of "Cart Abandon + Similar Products" which means the first recommendation displayed is an item left in cart and the additional recommendations displayed are similar products.
The other recommendation scheme selection is "Only Cart Abandon Products", which means you can show all items left in their shopping cart. You will need to use pure HTML for this functionality so you can use conditional formatting to only display items left in cart and not display empty placeholders. Please see the attached HTML you can use as a guide when writing this custom formatting.
